Rethinking education assessment and ILOs, in the era of GenAI
Abstract: Generative AI is transforming university education in ways that go far beyond assessment and plagiarism detection, forcing a reconsideration of what students should actually learn. In service computing and service engineering, where abstraction, composition, and orchestration are central, large language models fundamentally alter how systems are specified, built, and reasoned about. This talk argues that the core challenge is not how to assess learning in the presence of GenAI, but which Intended Learning Outcomes (ILOs) remain meaningful. By contrasting classical, ML-based, and LLM-enabled approaches to service engineering, the talk highlights emerging risks such as shallow understanding and loss of independence, alongside new opportunities for AI-augmented design. It proposes updated ILOs for service engineering education, emphasizing understanding the limits of statistical AI, human-in-the-loop system design, ethical responsibility, explainability, and sustainability, while reaffirming the enduring importance of algorithmic thinking and systems reasoning.
